Elements & Modality

Each of the signs are categorized into different elements: Earth (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo), Air (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra), Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), and Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius). They are sorted this way for a number of reasons, mostly to differentiate their states of consciousness. This idea was first presented by astronomer Claudius Ptolemy (approx. 90-168 A.D.).

Think of it this way: Earth brings stability, Air brings clarity, Water brings revitalization, and Fire brings warmth. This simplicity will make it easier to relate to each of the signs.

In the same sense, the signs of the zodiac are also divided into three modes that correspond to the seasons. As explained by Gahl Sasson in Cosmic Navigator,

  • The cardinal modality marks the beginning of the season and the power of initiation.
  • The fixed modality corresponds to the middle of the season and the power of sustaining.
  • The mutable modality represents the end of the season and the power of change.

Self-Definition & Horoscopes

A lot people get the wrong idea when it comes to Astrology. Many make the mistake of seeing their zodiac sign(s) as traits that they should have, and often times people see things that they don’t necessarily agree with, thus they scoff at the idea of Astrology all together. That, or they think that something must be wrong and that they need to change who they are to fit the assigned traits of their zodiac.

Let me get one thing completely straight: your zodiac sign is not who you are. It is not who you are suppose to be. The traits of your sign should not be the only adjectives that come to mind when someone asks you to describe yourself. I’m not saying that a person can’t be incredibly similar to what their sign dictates, but as I alluded to in my first post, it would simply be impossible to categorize the approximately 7.2 billion people on Earth into 12 different signs and have them be completely correct.

Welcome to Astrology Fix!

Hey there everyone! My name is Jessy and I’ll be using this blog to talk about astrology, mainly for my MC 4381 class, but also as a side project for myself.

Astrology offers a number of things which many people find very desirable: information and assurance about the future, a way to be absolved of their current situation and future decisions, and a way to feel connected to the entire cosmos. I’ve been deeply interested in the topic since early middle school, and while I don’t always take the “advice” or “predictions” too seriously—because honestly, how do you categorize billions of people into 12 signs—I do find that sometimes there are many truths in some of the so-called traits and mannerisms described.

Because of this, I plan to explore the surprising and often overlooked diversity that lies within the twelve (sometimes thirteen, but we’ll get to that later) signs of the zodiac and how they can contribute to each person uniquely. The zodiac is about much more than simple horoscopes and compatibility, and I wish to expose to anyone interested in learning more about astrology.

I will be using some external references and websites to further my explorations as well as to serve as a tool for others to use should they decide to explore for themselves.

See you next time!
